As the year-end approaches many gamers know what this means in terms of news for gaming releases, it’s the triple-A season! With fall finally arriving, we will see plenty of big and highly anticipated game releases hitting the shelves pretty soon. To get ahead of Christmas shopping why not get some of the best titles releasing this year? Who says a brand-new horror game or action-packed shooter isn’t the ideal gifts to get your Dad, your mom, or even your sister? Let’s take a look at these titles that are sure to make for perfect gifts.
Gotham Knights (October 21)
This new title coming from WB Games Montréal is a spiritual successor to the beloved Rocksteady Arkham trilogy. While it is not a direct sequel it is the first full-on Batman game we are getting since Arkham Knight’s release in 2015. This time around you will not be playing the caped crusader but rather his misfit band of sidekicks, the Bat Family. Starring Dick Grayson as Nightwing, Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, Tim Drake as Robin, and the infamous Jason Todd as Red Hood, you will take over the streets of Gotham to stop many villains of the rogue’s gallery. It is once again an open-world game with a beat ‘em up and stealth focus but with a looting system this time around. You will be pitted against some familiar faces like Mr. Freeze, Harley Quinn, and Two-Face but the focus of the game will be taking down the court of Owls and the villainous Talon. So offer Gotham for Christmas!
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide (November 30)
Another quarter, another Warhammer game, but this one is different from the many titles we see put out by Games Workshop every year. Darktide is developed by the now-renowned Swedish company Fatshark! Developers of the incredibly successful Vermintide, Darktide aims to do for Warhammer 40,000 what it did for Warhammer Fantasy. A Left 4 Dead-like survival shooter putting you in the shoes of the most undesirable tools of the empire to fight against the unending waves of Chaos and Orkish troops threatening the Imperium. This game has been pushed back and teased for many years and will finally reach our favorite game stores. Get your bolters and your chainswords ready, this game will get bloody.
The Callisto Protocol
This is one of the big ones for 2022, helmed by Glen Schofield, this new space horror game is aiming to be a spiritual successor to the Dead Space franchise, once directed by Schofield as well. You will be put in the spacesuit of a space pilot called Jacob Lee, similarly to Isaac Clarke in Dead Space, Jacob is not a warrior and will have to learn to fend for himself through the game. As he crashes on the planet Callisto he is thrown into the high-security Black Iron Prison. There he will meet the horror of the Bio page and have to find any tool he can to destroy the Biophage monsters and make sure he can stay alive long enough to escape Black Iron Prison and find a way off Callisto. Dead Space veterans will be pleased to see the gorgeous creature design, visceral combat, and death animations as well as the classic over-the-shoulder perspective made famous by the Dead Space Trilogy. If you are the kind to love a little holiday fear, this is the perfect title to unwrap on Christmas night.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns
What if you gave a license to the creators of X-COM to make a superhero game? Well, this is what you get. A fast pace, brutal, and crazy turn-based game starring Wolverine, Ironman, Ghost Rider, Blade, and more fighting the demonic hordes as they try to take over the Marvel Universe. Made in Unreal by Firaxis Games and Marvel Games, Midnight Sun aims to give older audiences the Marvel game they want while so much of Marvel’s content is aimed at younger audiences.
As you can see the year-end is packed with new and interesting titles to get for yourself or wrap up for a Christmas gift exchange. Of course, all these games are also available on digital storefronts so you can spare the environment and save up on wrapping paper by simply gifting a code to your favorite game on your favorite DRM platform.
